The College of Physics and Electronic Engineering (SPEE) of Chongqing Normal University (CNU) is one of the first colleges established of its kind upon foundation of the CNU in 1954. Currently, the college has 72 faculty members, including 19 professors, 21 associate professors, 1 doctoral supervisor, and 21 master supervisors, members holding doctoral degree accounting for 60 % of teaching faculty. The college offers three full-time undergraduate programs, i.e. Physics, Electronic Information Science and Technology, and Optical and Electrical Information Science & Engineering. It now has more than 1,400 undergraduate students and nearly 100 master candidates. Besides, the college is also home to Chongqing Society of Physics.
SPEE attaches great importance to discipline construction. It has physics established as a key discipline of Chongqing, and has optical engineering as a discipline supporting application for doctoral degree. The college offers master programs of two general disciplines – physics and optical engineering, and a master program of didactics (physics teaching and application of modern education technology); it also offers master programs of physics education and didactics (application of modern education technology) to secondary vocational education teachers.
SPEE has multiple teaching and scientific research platforms of municipal level, including Chongqing Key Laboratory for Optical and Electrical Functional Materials, Chongqing Higher Education Institution KeyOptical Engineering Laboratory, Chongqing Physical Experiment Teaching and DemonstrationCenter, Chongqing Scientific Research andInnovation Team, and Chongqing Pilot Area for Talent Cultivation Mode Innovation.
In SPEE, there is Department of Physics, Department of Electronic Engineering, Department of Optical and Electrical Engineering, Laboratory, Solar Energy Research Center, and Physics Education Research Office. The Laboratory of the college covers 10,000 m2 and is provided with equipment worth over 40 million yuan.
In terms of scientific research, the college is committed to research in fields of laser unit devices, information optics, optoelectronic materials and devices, functional magnetic materials, and amorphous materials. It has made many research achievements, while having nearly one hundred projects sponsored by national and provincial funds. In the past five years, it has received research funds aggregating up to over 10 million yuan.
Since its establishment, SPEE has cultivated more than 10,000 junior school students, undergraduate students and master candidates (counting over 200). In recent years, the college has intensified its teaching staff construction, implemented stricter teaching management and adopted multi-level modular experiment teaching. Through all these, it has promoted the experimental skills and innovation capacity of students. Nearly 50% undergraduates are award winners innational electronic design contests for college students, mathematical modeling contests for college students, single-chip microcomputer design contests, mathematic contests and “Challenge Cup” contests of national or municipal level. Graduates from the college are characterized by high mental quality, solid theoretical foundation, proficient special skills and high devotion to work, and thus are highly praised by employers. In the past five years, the employment rate of graduates has maintained above 97%. By fostering business backbones and leading talents, the college is also a contributor to development of the science and education undertaking in Chongqing.
